The Florida Department of Health

The Florida Department of Health is a governmental organization. The DOH has locations in each county throughout the State of Florida. Their mission is to promote, protect, and improve the health of Floridians. The DOH works with the state, counties, and district offices to provide the majority of public health services. Fortunately, most of their services are available to the public at no charge or for a small fee based on their income. A major focus for the DOH is disease control. Such services and programs for disease control include AIDS/HIV testing, immunizations, STI testing, epidemiology, health promotion, tuberculosis control and chronic disease programs. Another focus of The DOH is primary care and personal health services. Some programs include WIC, Healthy Start, and Home Health Care. Some services include nutrition services, food inspections, water supplies, waste disposal, radiation control, emergency medical services, toxicology and environmental epidemiology, pharmacy, and vital record keeping. The DOH is very well rounded within the realm of public health service; an individual with any background or interest in public health could find a suitable job. One of their programs that really caught my interest is the Healthy Community, Healthy People Program. The more I read, the more I was thinking this is it! The program is a comprehensive, community based health promotion and wellness initiative. The program’s focus is designed to reduce the incidence of chronic disease through the alteration of individuals’ behavioral risk factors. This program is for aimed use by the local community, small businesses, healthcare providers and insurers, and organizations. The goal is to be able to effectively learn and develop healthy lifestyles.
I think this would be an incredible organization to work for and develop a career in for several reasons. First, their services are so diverse. The DOH has the potential to satisfy any interest within the realm of public health. I really would like to make an impact on my own community through improving their health and well being. Second, an important part of my job search is to stay in Florida; my family, friends, and entire life is here and I can’t imagine wanting to live anywhere else. Third, as we’ve heard from the guest speakers, there is opportunity for advancement. Working for The Florida Department of Health would allow me to improve health and health outcomes for my own community while developing a career.

  2. The Florida Department of Health sounds like a wonderful organization to work for. I didn’t realize that the Florida DOH offered such a wide variety of services and programs to the community, especially the fact that most of these services are free to the public. Like you, the reason why I was attracted to my employer, Doctors Without Borders, was the impact that you would be making on a community by providing proper and preventive medical treatment as well as improving the overall health of its people. One thing that differentiates our individual appeal to our employers is that I, although enjoy living in sunny Florida, would love to travel to different parts of the world and experience different cultures. If, on the other hand, I decide to stay in Florida, the Florida Department of Health sounds like the perfect employer for me.

  3. I really believe that the Florida Department of Health is another great organization to work for. One it is a federal government job and secondly it works with different dynamics in the community. This organization was one of my potential employer choices. I like the fact that the services that the Florida Department of Health provides are accessible to the community. The Department really tries to make the lifestyle in Floridians much healthier than what it is now. As for the Potential Employer I chose to blog about, it is on global Level. The Partners In Health works in communities around the world in order to provide healthier lifestyles to the natives. The programs they implement can range from nutrition to maternal and child health. I really like how both of our organizations have some parallelism between each other, one is more locally and the other on a global level. I look forward to learning more information about the Florida Department of Health as you do for Partners In Health.
