The United States Air Force is a government operated organization with locations throughout the world. The Air Force has numerous career opportunities but I am really interested in becoming a public health officer. Public health officers in the Air Force apply preventive and public health measures to reduce and control the incidence of communicable diseases and occupational illnesses in military personnel during both peace time and wartime contingencies. Their primary duty is to ensure the individual health and safety of soldiers and their families. Secondary is to provide medical assistance and coordinate health care in regions torn apart by natural disasters or wars. So far I have served nine years as an enlisted member of the Air Force and have firsthand knowledge of the duties, perks and drawbacks associated with being a soldier. The perks are full medical coverage, job security, steady pay, structure/uniformity and the opportunity to travel the world. Pay is based on Rank and time served and raises are given with increases in ranks and also every year from the time you entered service. Traveling in my opinion is a key incentive; you have a option of relocating as often as every two years if you like. And the locations can be anywhere with locations being as beautiful a location as Aviano, Italy at the foot of the Carnic, Alps to remote locations like Azores, Portugal, your travel options are endless. The only drawback with being military is that the contract evolves a service commitment that involves yourself and family. And with this service commitment quitting isn’t an option; contracts must be served in full. And persons not honoring their contract are punished by Court Martial under Article 86 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and are subject to serious prison time.
