Healthy Start Coalition

The Healthy Start Coalition is a governmental organization located in 31 counties throughout the state of Florida. Each coalition is formed of local professionals, schools, hospitals, the United Way, individuals, and charities. These members work together to improve the health and well-being of pregnant women. This organization is great for those who'd like to work in the area of maternal and child health. It provides a number of resources and programs for not only pregnant women, but also their families and new babies. I'd like to work for this organization because I feel that mothers make the world go round. Without them, there would be no us. It is important to make sure they are healthy during such a life-changing transition. The Healthy Start Coalition nurtures them with education, guidance, and assistance. Mothers and families are provided with all that they need. What I like most about the organization is the Healthy Teen Network. I would love to eventually work with teens to prevent pregnancy as well as work with teens that are already pregnant. This network works specifically to find ways to lower teen pregnancy rates in Hillsborough County and also improve the lives of young mothers and their children. Though I have not experienced it myself, it is important to educate and assist our younger generation. They are our future and before they can even experience life, they are having children of their own. I would like to help in any way that I can.

  1. Healthy Start Coalition definitely sounds like an interesting place to work. I agree with you that Mothers make the world go around. The Healthy Teen Network seems like a very rewarding part of the job. While I have not experienced teen pregnancy myself, I have several members of my extended family that have and I see the struggles they have in their lives trying to provide for their children at such a young age. Because Healthy Start Coalition provides programs like this to the public, I think working there would provide great reward. I would be able to see the difference I’m making by working directly with the affected population.

  2. One of the reasons I chose health policy is because I feel I can dabble in different areas of public health. For me, the two areas I have the most interest in is MCH and Health policy. I think Healthy Start is one of those programs that are so essential for a supportive community framework for pregnant women. These are the type of programs I would like to start and support all over the nation and I think as a health policy I can do that. I also agree with you when you say that we need to education the younger generation because they really are the key to changing the future.
